LAARS: When we left on our first drive across Canada in 2007 he was just 2.5 mo. We lived in our last house in BC for 2 years (2010-12), a big chunk of his life and virtually the only place he remembers so it was a real ‘uprooting’ in his mind. Leaving for Mexico has been somewhat traumatic for Laars who is now turning 8 (June 2015). He has been wanting to see the Eiffel Tower since he was about 2 yo, and we plan to go when he’s 16.
BEFORE the Journey Began:
Laars answered Mom’s Questionnaire April 2013 (5yo)
Were you looking forward to going or not? Why or why not?
Yes, because we were going to be camping.
What did you fear the most before starting?
I was scared of nothing.
What were you most excited about?
I was really wanting to camp but I didn’t know why you (Mom) wanted to give away our house cuz I really loved our house.
ON the Journey:
What do you miss the most since travelling?
Our house and everything and my friends (*he got choked up and teary-eyed)
What has been your favourite memory since the family began travelling?
I love swimming, camping in tents, we see rattlesnakes and other snakes.
What types of things have you learned since hitting the road?
Swim, and write my name.
Have your fears materialized yet?
Remember, I wasn’t scared.
Are you glad your family is doing this slow long-term travel? Why or why not?
Yeah, because we will see some chipmunks in the trees, and different birds than in Canada.
