Seems strange that we actually became friends with these crazy Berg’s because Denise came to pick up books and cabinets to squeeze into her tiny log house. They were planning to build a new house, and we were leaving town in 2007 for our first trip across Canada. Actually, at the time of our meeting we were decluttering and talking/dreaming about Ecuador. But when my sister’s house burned down the end of August we decided suddenly to head east instead of south.
Before we actually left BC we had cemented our friendship not by giving them a king size mattress to stack on top of mattresses they already had so one needed a step ladder to crawl into bed, nor the full-size matching stainless steel fridge and freezer with a forever-dent thanks to our second born standing on a piano bench that shot out from underneath of her. And it wasn’t for the love of books we shared and passed on to them. These items were eventually to take residence in their big beautiful house they were building in Parksville overlooking the beach.
I think the thing that cemented our friendship was their kindness and enthusiasm to provide a space for one of our daughters who decided to stay behind in BC as nine members of her family trekked across to Nova Scotia. They offered Rauchelle a cabin at the edge of the ocean where she got peace and quiet….until the eventful morning when she realized a rat was consuming her stashed chocolate and she shot that thing right through with her air rifle pellets. She knew there were more rats scratching to get into her treasures when she wasn’t looking, and she was ready to move out ( that cabin actually was torn right down soon after).
Anyways, so now we are friends and everytime we come to the Parksville area we get served a yummy meal at their lovely long table of hospitality that fits us all at one time! Can I hear “Treat!”
