Karen’s Bucket List includes a flight in a hot air balloon (and a helicopter ride). Simple, quiet, floating on the breeze.
Haven’t struck it off yet.
But I did attend my first (small) Hot Air Balloon Festival in Cortez over the weekend. Vibrant colours like crazy quilts of the skies.
We saw a few from our ‘kitchen’ Friday morning but scheduled to get up early on Saturday to check things out. I expected that they would be rising around sunrise, but either I’m totally mistaken or they like to sleep in like I do! We arrived at Parque de Viva in Cortez around 6:30 and discovered they were having some sort of pow-wow in the parking lot. But that was cool, because we got to see the whole process of setting up that we would otherwise have missed.
Motorhomes, pickup trucks with/out lifts, trailers…..all different kinds of rigs to carry their baskets, balloons, all the paraphernalia to make these beauties soar…..jump the sidewalk and arrange themselves in rows across the park lawn.
Teams strew colours of endless ribbons along the grass, arranging baskets, fans puffing up fabric to billow in the morning light, tether lines weighted by human bodies.
Patterns rise from their horizontal position to rise into the sky, slowly carrying occupants higher as flames lick off & on into the heart of the balloon. We feel warmth as they pass overhead.
There were 2 matching pink (with brown
tits tops) balloons right beside each other that caught our eye. They both launched about the same time, flying near each other. Caught our eye just because they were the same. Didn’t think anything of it. Until we were climbing into our van and right in front of us stopped a white pickup truck with some people riding in the box. A girls back was towards me and I read on her shirt The Tits Team. Ahhhhhh, got it!!!
Enjoyed so much, most of us went back Sunday morning for the final day. Maybe we’ll take in a festival sometime in Albuquerque, NM.
Albuquerque had world’s records concerning hot air balloons until just this past weekend. While we were thrilled to watch about 18 of them launch to the skies over Cortez, CO, France sent off 408 piloted balloons within 1 hour.
