Heading south from Arches (last Friday) we detoured into Canyonlands National Park, now it being early evening but still sweltering hot. A little ways before the Park entrance we came across Newspaper Rock Historical Site which was both fun and amazing to see.
It is estimated that some of the petroglyphs date back 1500 years. Some are as recent as the turn of the 20th Century. It’s been a protected site since the early 1900’s.
Archealogists aren’t sure of the purpose of these petroglyphs, if the rock was like a message board, a place to share stories of the hunt, or what. Some claim the pictures aren’t all done by human hands but a spirit from another world giving invite to those who would seek to visit another realm.
